Like most quilters, Kim is something of a Renaissance woman. Her diverse talents range from quilting, website design, and digital scrapbooking, to web graphics design, writing quilt patterns and, in her spare time, reading novels.

Kim began her quilting odyssey in 2000, when her husband was stationed overseas. Back home as a new mom, Kim lived with her grandmother who planted the quilting seed by starting her off with little chores such as strip cutting, eventually graduating her into machine sewing.

“I was terrified of it. It became easier and once I realized all I had to do was sew straight lines, I figured it would be a breeze,” she recalled. By the time her family was reunited, Kim was hooked.

Soon after learning to quilt, Kim discovered the world of online quilting forums and patterns. Her computer savvy made the transition from three-dimension quilts to one-dimension patterns an easy one. After learning the ropes of online forums, Kim started her own and challenged herself to write patterns for forum members for a “Block of the Month” lottery. As her pattern-writing skills grew, so did the level of complexity of her designs. Her favorite quilting patterns are ones that look complicated but are broken down into easy-to-piece units.

Loving pattern design but not their marketing, Kim realized her greatest pleasure came when someone chose her pattern over all others and then shared a photo of the finished quilt with her.

“That is when I decided to just give my patterns away for download on my website. Some of my members donate funds to help with the website costs, some don’t. I am just happy that I can share my patterns with the internet community and plan on doing it as long as I can,” Kim said.
