Last March, as many may already know, there was a devastating tsunami in Japan. Many were displaced by it. My guild has a project called “Operation Friendship”. (to read more about it, go here).

My goal this month was to make two quilts for this. They are to be 12” square, quilted, bound, and have two small loops for hangers on them.

Here are some tops I got completed today for it:

These were really fun to make. Each day, I get the “Block of the Day” from Quilt Pro. I have been saving some. They don’t normally come in 12” sizes, so I redrafted them in EQ (shh! don’t tell!) for larger or just added borders. I did re-draft some to make paper –piecing templates.

I will practice machine quilting on these and then bind them and have them ready for the next guild meeting later this month.

Judy picked #1 – which for me is Arrowhead. I am going to change that one to something else since I know it is going to take me much longer than a month to do it. I will still continue to try and get 5 blocks made a week (which I am sorely behind right now), but I think there is way too much to get done on this quilt – why I ever put it on my UFO list, I don’t know.

So I am changing the UFO to be my Pineapple Quilt Top.

It needs to be sandwiched, quilted, and bound.

If you are wondering, I did complete my #5 UFO, it was Geometric that can be seen here.

Over a year ago, I bought some fabric at a local quilt store. I fell in love with the print, so I bought some coordinating tone-on-tone fabrics.

I have been wanting to start this project for a while, but I had to wait to find a perfect pattern for it, and not have so many new projects going at once (haha, I know). When I found out I was able to go on the retreat, I wanted to start that project.

I cut all the fabric out and got the blocks completed at retreat. As I was adding the last borders, Judy posted about a quilt she made for her husband Vince… The same quilt. It was her design, Peaches & Dreams.

Shown at guild the other night, this top is king sized.

I will say, after working on the different brands of fabrics, I know why now I prefer to work with Moda fabrics the most. It doesn’t slip as much when your working with the same brand of fabric – the weave seems to interlock better and prevent slippage. Moda also doesn’t fray as much as some of these fabrics – at least I don’t notice it as much. I don’t want to start a controversial thread about my fabric is better than your fabric, I just know what I prefer to work with. It is just a shame that the four LQS’s don’t really carry Moda here, they would get a lot more of my business!

This was a kit that I bought in March. In all things considered, it didn’t take that long to make. I started making the blocks in June. It took me a week to make all the blocks and extra half-square triangles. It then sat for a few months.

This was really easy to put together. It went together well because all of the half-square-triangles were made when the blocks were made.

No, I am not going to Paris this fall. I am still going to be in Hawaii. I am talking about the Block of the Month that This and That designed using French General’s fabric.

I ran into a speed bump when I was making one of the blocks and used up too much of the fabrics. I had to order more fabric – or so I thought of the finishing kit. I am glad I didn’t have to because though I ordered the same pattern of the fabric, not the same color way. It was really hard to tell online when the shades are just slightly different. I used the leftover fabrics to piece the back.

This was one of the tops I completed during my blogging hiatus. I also cut the batting for it, so it is just waiting to be sandwiched.

I fell in love with the fabric and bought the kit from “The Fat Quarter Shop” – and in true-to-me fashion, I decided it needed to be larger so I ordered more fabric. It is 5 x 5 .

One of the quilt tops I got done during my hiatus was my Tomorrow’s Heirlooms Top.

I have had the blocks completed for a while, I just never knew how I wanted to set them. I never bought the finishing kit, and frankly I didn’t like it. But in retrospect, I should have bought it just so I could have gotten the hydrangea fabric for an outer border. I had bought matching white-on-white fabric just on a whim – I am glad I did.

These blocks were started in 2005. I had been on a year-long hiatus when I was in Washington State. I wanted something easy to start back on after so long. It was a Marti Michell Block-of-the-Month. The blocks are not “easy” per se from aspect that there are a lot of pieces, but with the templates to be used, it was easy because of the cutting was more accurate and the kits were already there.

I finished the blocks in 2007 shortly after we moved to Hawaii. They then set waiting for me to have the “perfect” setting for them. I never really could find it. Nothing hit me with it.

Fast forward to about a week ago. I had bought new containers for my projects to go in my shelves, and while I was transferring the projects to the new containers, I came across these blocks again. I decided I would set them simply and make a wall-hanging of them. I have a purple mottled backing fabric that I bought by accident online that would be perfect for this. I will use the same fabric to bind the quilt.
