2012 Hawaii Quilt Guild Show

Right now, my quilt guild is putting on its annual quilt show. Here are a few (okay, a lot of) photos from when I went today.

We are very fortunate to be able to hold it at the local art academy, The Honolulu Academy of Arts. We hold it for about 10 days each year.

In the past, there has been a featured artist that shows their work in the lobby. This year, the committee decided to feature our community service projects.

Na Lima Aloha (The Hands of Love) makes quilts for various groups around the island of Oahu.

The smaller quilts are some of the quilts we donated to the tsunami refugees.

Wounded Warrior quilts – quilts given to the Marine Base Kaneohe for those wounded in service.

Home of the Brave quilts (top). These quilts are given to family members of deceased service members from Hawaii.
Operation Kid Comfort (bottom). These photo quilts are given to children of deployed service members.

Now I am going to dedicate this post and the next post to the viewer’s choice awards. In the past, you were able to vote for your favorite three quilts in the show. Then on the last day, the ribbons were posted. This year, the committee decided that they would only allow voting for the first three days, and that the viewer’s choice ribbons would be hung for most of the show. I think I got pictures of all of the viewer’s choice awarded.

So this post is about viewer’s choice, first place. This quilt was stunning and the photos do not do it justice.

A Mother’s Day Gift

This year, with my husband away, I made my mother-in-law a set of napkins and placemats for her mother’s day gift. The delivery confirmation says it was received, so I can post about it now. This is one of the secret projects I was working on in March.

I used Nicole’s Napkin tutorial to make the napkins. I love them how they end up quite large, and very sturdy. My MIL has several things with a chili pepper motif, so this fabric that I bought years ago to make her something worked really well. The edging/background fabric (green, red, black) is Moda Bella – I just love that fabric!! There is a set of six napkins.

I also made a set of six placemats:

I just used the fabric and backed them with Moda Bella in black. I had found at Missouri Quilt Company, some Moda Bella bias binding already pre-cut/pressed, etc on a roll so that all you have to do is go. I don’t know if I would do it for every project that it calls for, but it was nice to just get going on the project. I bought about 15 yards of binding and have about half of it left.

Weekend & Mother’s Day

Saturday, I had an adventure. It was my monthly sewing bee of the Sassy S&B Quilters. I normally hold it on Saturdays at a community center provided by the management company of the housing I live in. Since it is on Saturday, I have to pick up the keys to the room on the Friday before. I forgot to do it, despite the many comments to friends “I can’t wait to go sew tomorrow”. This is only the second time in four years that I forgot to pickup the key the day before the bee. Needless to say, I was kicking myself. The last time I forgot the key, it was the night before after they closed and I had time to call everyone and cancel. I didn’t even remember this time until I was pulling up to the room to unload my car. There was a couple of people already waiting. I called around and finally was able to leave a message for the manager. We waited for an hour and with no phone call back, I decided to pick up and move to my house. Luckily, I had cleaned a few days before, so it wasn’t too bad (otherwise I wouldn’t have even offered to have people come back to my house). Some declined, and that was fine, we have about 15 –25 people show up every month to the bees (hence the reason to hold it at the community center!). We caravan to my house, which isn’t very far away, and unload our stuff. I unload my car so we could have extra tables (usually three tables, an ironing board, an office chair, and then my machine and projects). During this, my friend Maureen showed up and noticed that someone was opening the pool that was behind the room, and asked if he had keys to the room. He stated no and I think asked if he wanted her to call someone. She did and thirty minutes later the office manager called me and asked if I was able to get into the room. This is about 30 minutes after we left to go to my house. She was super nice and said she (or someone else) would meet me at the office to let me get the key). We all pack up again (only Kristin the superwoman was sewing already) and head back to the community center. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful – just a nice day with friends!

For mother’s day, my children told me to stay in bed, to not get up. I pretty much assumed they wanted to make me breakfast in bed. All week long I was getting questions like “so when you make bagels in the toaster, you push the bagel button, right?” and “do you like ketchup with your hash browns” and “how do you like your eggs?”. I was a little scared because my son (12) is just beginning to cook and while that is fine, my husband is on deployment right now, so no adult supervision downstairs while he cooked.

They came upstairs with this:

A bagel with cream cheese, and scrambled eggs. Yes, no hash browns, because I told them I couldn’t have them. The eggs were a little undercooked, but I really wasn’t that hungry that early so that was fine. It was a great attempt for his first time making scrambled eggs! I am proud of my kiddos!

Another Quilt Finish

It was bound to happen sooner or later, a slew of quilts being finished at once. I managed to get bindings completely on 2 quilts over the weekend.

This was the second quilt I bound over the weekend.

All I have to do now is add a temporary hanging sleeve. This quilt will be donated to the Hopes and Dreams Challenge in the name of my guild.

Summer Day Finish

I managed to complete Summer Day over the weekend.

I will wash it with a ton of color catchers his week and give it to the intended recipient.

The blues are “Bundle of Jungle” by Marcus Fabrics. The white and reds are Moda Bella Solids. It measures about 48” square.
