Weekend Sewing

Over the weekend I got the bug  to work on an old project – the 2012 Designer Mystery Block of the Month.

Modern Baby

A few months ago, while I was still in school for my first degree and working part time, my husband asked me if I would make a crib bed skirt for his coworker.  She couldn’t find the right colors that she wanted and knew I sewed.

I figured the best way to have her pick out colors was to send off my moda bella solids color card and have her pick from that.  Once I did that I sat down to order the fabrics.  Wouldn’t you know it, one of the fabrics was no longer in stock.  I tried to get one that was closest to the color, but without the color card, it was hard.

The Fat Quarter Shop fortunately had new color cards in stock on sale.  I love this thing.  Since Bella Solids are my “go to” fabric for backgrounds, I love having this on hand!  Especially when I am looking for a particular color to match.

Today was her baby shower.  I started working on this project around the 5th and you can see the start of the project here.

Here is one side of the skirt.  I couldn’t get a good picture of it laying out.  The colors are actually more turquoise than blue that it looks like here.  The colors are more true in the post from before.

I finished the crib skirt on Wednesday night.  Since it was a commissioned project, I still wanted to give her a gift.  I purchased extra fabrics and made her a baby quilt.

The pattern is basically Awesome by Jaimie Mueller .  Instead of the pieced strips, I did solid strips for each row.  I also altered the layout to make it more symmetrical. The quilting was just in the ditch around each block and then diagonally in the blank spaces.  To give it a little more interest, I  went one direction on one side of the quilt and then the other direction on the other side of the quilt.

The quilt was made in about 24 hours from start to finish.  I started the quilt at 10am on Thursday and finished the quilt about the same time on Friday.  That is from cutting, to piecing, to sandwiching, to quilting, and binding.  I don’t ever want to do that again.  I am exhausted!

Here is the label I put on the quilt (sorry for it being blurry, my hubby took the photo with his phone because I forgot to).  The reverse side says:

Because my husband forgot to pick up a card when he got the gift bags, I made a quick card this morning before dropping it off.

20150417_095708I used what I had on hand and just purchased the shape from the Silhouette store.  If I had more time I would have made something else, but it is still cute.

Now to take a small break before the start of the next project!

My Birthday

Last Friday was my birthday and I decided to buymyself a present. Traditionally,  I generally buy my quilting notions as presents myself.

These have been out a little while, it seems,  but I have not seen them until recently.  I saw a video and fell in love with the pillow case seen here

Actual Sewing Content (mostly!)

I did a little sewing over the weekend.  I have a project that I was asked to make.  Here is the color palate;  all Moda Bella Solids.

It wouldn’t have been possible without these two feet,  My rolled hem foot and my new ruffler foot.  It has made short work this job.

Before I could get to some sewing, however, I had to clean my desk off that was piled with a lot of stuff that has accumulated over the several months that I haven’t sewn.

I belong to the Fat Quarter Shop’s mini charm pack club of the month.  Where you get 4 different mini charm packs a month.  Many of these were in the mailer and unopened.

And here they are all laid out showing the different lines
20150404_132557Since it was Easter weekend, I did some baking.  Here are the cupcakes I took to class Friday night.  Funfetti with homemade vanilla and chocolate buttercream frosting.  The eggs on top are Hershey’s candy coated chocolate.20150403_153024

And here is the cake I made for Easter dinner:  Vanilla cake with raspberry butter cream and chocolate butter cream accents with the Hershey eggs for decorations.  The cake plate is a Fiesta cake plate that I got from my inlaws for graduation.

I hope everyone had a great Easter Weekend!
