A Few Finishes

While I was out of school on winter break a few weeks ago, I managed to get a little sewing done.  I made some gifts for family that lives near me for Valentine’s Day.  Now that they have their gifts, I can post about them.

This one was for my niece L. She loves the dolls of LaLa Loopsy.  I found the fabric on spoonflower and ordered it.  I had the blue and the yellow.  Yellow is her favorite color, but I didn’t have enough of any yellow fabric to make the ruffled parts, so I opted for just a contrasting band.

Here is the one I made for my other niece, M.  She absolutely loves anything with mustaches on it.  The new fabric “Honky Tonk” by Moda,  fit the bill.  I added a brown Moda “solid” to it.

I made this little runner for my SIL and BIL for V-day.  It is from Northcott’s Stonehenge Line.

Last, but not least, I made some napkins for my MIL and FIL.  Again, “Honky Tonk” by Moda fit the bill, paired with the same “Solid” by Moda that I used in the pillowcase above.

I had a wonderful time making these gifts.  They were small enough projects that I didn’t feel overwhelmed (well, I would have preferred to have had a ruffling attachment for my sewing machine for the pillowcases).  I was elated to get to spend time sewing in my sewing room instead of working on homework, longingly looking towards the fabric side of the room.

Wow. It has been a LONG time!

I surely have not realized how long it has been since I have blogged.   I have completed two quarters of school.  The first quarter, I made four A’s.

All Grades

The second quarter, I made two A’s and one A-.

All Grades 1013

I have about a year left until I graduate – 4 more quarters I was originally scheduled to go only three more quarters – but some of the quarters were scheduled at 20 hours.  While I am good – I don’t think I am that good to get all A’s doing that much!  I decided to extend my graduation out one more quarter and take less classes.

In other news, I have not sewn a stitch in a while.  I have been on break for a week, but since it was Christmas time, I was busy wrapping gifts, (being a bum around the house) and getting ready for Christmas.  Now that Christmas is over and I still have about a week and a half left until school starts again, I plan on rectifying that situation soon – I just have to clean up all the presents and things that got piled in my sewing room after that big day.

I am still alive

I am still alive.  Just extremely busy.

All of my things made it to San Antonio.  I still have four boxes to unpack and put away for my sewing room. All but three boxes for the rest of the house have been gone through and either put away or stored.

I started college again three weeks ago.  It has been insane!  17 hours in four classes.  I go at night from 6-11pm; one class a night.  I have not even unpacked my sewing machines and tested them.

I am hoping once my kids start school in about a  week and a half, things will calm down a bit more because I can do homework while they are at school in a quiet house and enjoy my weekends.

The one good thing about taking so many classes at a time is that I will graduate with an Associates in Applied Science in 15 months.  So if you only hear from me sporadically in the next few months, you know why now.

The Scrappy Quilter

Things are slowly getting back to normal after our move to Texas.  We found a place to live – that was the main obstacle in our path when we first got here.

Since January we had decided that we were going to rent a friend’s house for at least a year and stopped looking for anything.  The timeframe was perfect; the current renter’s lease was up when we needed to be in it seemed to be kismet.  Unfortunately, the current renters didn’t like the idea of leaving and decided to stay in the house.  My friend is in a legal battle to get them kicked out.  With not knowing how long that would take and the hotel bill eating any savings we had we had to look for somewhere new to live fast.  We found a place and have been living in the house for almost a week.  Another unfortunate event, all of our household goods are still not here – though in the area, the company couldn’t deliver them until this coming Monday.  I really can’t wait to get all of my things.

In many of our errands around town to get items for the house that we don’t have or couldn’t wait for, we noticed that almost down the street (less than 5 miles away) is a new little quilt shop called “The Scrappy Quilter”.

This little shop has been open for just over a year and has the most wonderful ladies (at least the ones I have met so far) working there.  They were so friendly and inviting!  Once they realized that I was new to the area, and my husband was just about to retire from the military, the tips and suggestions to local restaurants, shops, etc. started to flow!

They have a little class area and I can’t wait to take a class there (there is one on the 30th that I want to take, but I really need to see how my machine and stuff fair before I sign up for it.  Also, I have classes that start on the 31st.  I am in an 18month associates degree program for Medical Practice Management.

But I am sure you want to see what I bought from my new LQS, right?

I bought a kit that is the above fabric to go with this pattern included:

I also bought the below fabric to work on a quilt for my husband soon

I will see what I have for a black and a black in my stash to go with them.

Boy, my sewing machine can’t get here fast enough!!

From Texas

Sorry for the long absence from the blog; my family has moved from Hawaii to Texas.  We are still in the traveling phase of our move while we visit friends and family we haven’t seen in a long time.

Our last day in our house was the 6th of June.  We flew from Honolulu to Oakland on the 12th of June.  We have been traveling since.

Our stops were:

Oakland to San Diego:  we went to the San Diego Zoo and had a blast.  The drive through LA was not fun.  It took us a VERY LONG TIME to go from North LA to South LA, mainly because we ended up there on a Friday afternoon.

San Diego to Phoenix:  We visited some friends just outside of Phoenix.  We saw temperatures (according to our car) of 114 degrees.

Phoenix to Carlsbad, NM.  We had every intention of going to see the Carlsbad Caverns, but we were all road weary and starting to catch colds that everyone said we should just sit in the hotel and rest.

Carlsbad, NM to San Antonio TX.    We stopped in Midland, TX for lunch and met a friend from HI who lives near there now.  It was great catching up.  San Antonio the first time was a quick trip to check on our cats and visit family really quick.

San Antonio to Houston:  We had several stops in the Houston area to visit friends.  We also went to an Astro’s game where my son got two batting practice balls.

Houston to East Texas:  where I am now.   Visiting my sister and my dad.   Where I have been asked to make chicken and dumplings later today.
